Quick answer
Cantera is a soft volcanic stone containing pumice and colored aggregates in a quartz matrix. Adoquin is a denser, harder variety with a rougher look. Both are porous and prone to dulling, scratching and abrasion, but both can be restored rather than replaced: they are cleaned with pH-neutral products, honed or polished to the finish you want, and sealed with a penetrating sealer.
Why it matters
Because it is relatively soft, cantera is used for decorative work such as fountains, door surrounds, range hoods, balustrades, fireplaces, pool copings, columns and tile. High-use areas dull and scratch over time, and its porosity means it absorbs spills and stains quickly.
Cantera is also brittle. As floor tile it is usually a rough, rustic cut and needs careful thought before installation. It absorbs grout color readily, so grout can stain the tile or harden on the surface unless it is cleaned off thoroughly during installation.
About the material
Cantera is a quarried volcanic stone with pumice and colored aggregates in a quartz matrix. It is relatively soft and brittle, highly porous, and absorbs humidity without expanding. Adoquin is a denser, harder, rougher variety that shows the same kinds of wear.

Services
Diamond grinding levels uneven tiles and overly deep grout lines for a smooth surface.
Removes dull wear patterns, stains and spots, or converts to a soft, velvety matte finish.
Diamonds and polishing powders restore a dull polish or create a high, glass-like finish.

Our process
The method changes with the surface’s condition, color and the soil to be removed.

Sealing cantera
Cantera absorbs humidity without expanding, which makes it a natural choice for fountains, baths and pool areas, but its high porosity means it also soaks up spills and stains.
After cleaning and restoration, we recommend sealing cantera or adoquin fountains, showers, tub and pool surrounds and walls with a top-grade penetrating sealer. It helps keep moisture from soaking in, and an enhancing penetrating sealer deepens the stone’s natural tones.
We do not recommend topical or surface-coating sealers on cantera, which can cause problems over time and impair the tile. No one sealer fits every cantera application; the right product depends on the setting and conditions.
Cleaning cantera tile varies with its texture, color and factory blemishes, and with how cleanly it was installed. We use custom abrasive steps as needed and a strong truck-mounted vacuum system to recover the liquid from cleaning.
Compare the options
Either finish can be restored, and one can be converted to the other.
What to avoid
Cantera’s porosity makes a few mistakes costly.

Common questions
Yes. Honing removes wear patterns, stains and spots, and polishing can restore or add a high shine.
A top-grade penetrating sealer, possibly a color-enhancing one. Topical sealers are not recommended on cantera.
Adoquin is a denser, harder, rougher variety of cantera. It shows the same kinds of wear and can also be restored rather than replaced.
Only if its characteristics are considered before installation. Cantera is porous and brittle, and grout can stain it or harden on its surface, so it needs careful installation, cleaning and sealing.
