Interior Sealing

Interior Tile Sealing & Stain Proofing in San Diego

Penetrating (impregnating) sealers for interior marble, granite and other stone, tile and grout that repel water and stains, and when to reapply them.

Quick answer

What Does Interior Stone Sealing Do?

A stone sealer repels liquids so spills do not soak in and cause damage. Impregnating sealers penetrate the stone and form a strong, resistant barrier against stains and water. Reapply every year or two, or sooner once the stone becomes harder to clean. Sealing does not protect against scratches, dull spots or dust.

Why it matters

The Finishing Step for Stone Work

Protecting marble and granite is the easiest way to keep them lasting. Sealing is the ideal way to finish any granite or marble repair, and it is one of the most important services we provide for natural stone.

There is a wide range of sealers and application methods; for most interior stone we use impregnating sealers that penetrate rather than sit on the surface.

What benefits

Which Interior Surfaces Benefit From Sealing?

Sealing helps porous surfaces resist spills. Not every surface needs it.

Marble & limestone

Porous, acid-sensitive stone.

Granite

Still porous enough to absorb oil and wine.

Grout

Highly porous in tiled floors and showers.

Glazed tile

Glazed ceramic and porcelain tile itself does not need sealing; its grout may.

Our process

How Interior Sealing Is Done

The sealer goes on as the finishing step, after cleaning or repair.

01

Clean

Soil and residue are removed so nothing is sealed in.

02

Dry

The stone and grout must be dry before sealing.

03

Seal

An impregnating sealer penetrates and forms a barrier against stains and water.

04

Reapply

Every year or two, or sooner once the stone becomes harder to clean.

Reapplying

When to Reseal

Sealer wears with use and cleaning.

As part of routine stone maintenance, reapply sealer every year or two. The clearest sign is that the stone becomes harder to clean.

For acid-sensitive stone such as marble, limestone and onyx, a penetrating sealer cannot stop etching. A surface treatment such as MORE™ AntiEtch™ is designed for that.

What Sealing Does and Does Not Do

Liquids soaking in and stainingScratches
Water absorptionDull spots and wear
Easier cleanup of spillsDust and grit
Protecting a finished repairEtching from acids (see AntiEtch)

Know the limits

What Sealing Will Not Fix

Sealing repels liquids. It does not repair or protect against everything.

  • Scratches, dull spots and wear: honing or polishing
  • Etching on marble and other calcite stone: see MORE™ AntiEtch™
  • Existing stains: stain removal comes first
  • Dust and grit, which still need regular dust mopping
